Moving Commuters to Work Closer to Home
Studies revealed that 64% of Spotsylvania County’s residents were traveling every day on Interstate 95 to jobs outside of the County – mostly in Washington, D.C. These studies also pointed to a “hidden,” highly qualified workforce that wanted to work closer to home. These statistics showed an opportunity for Spotsylvania County to enhance its economic development efforts by keeping its workforce local, benefitting both businesses (who needed local, qualified workers) and individuals (who wanted to work closer to home).
SB&A worked with the Spotsylvania County Department of Economic Development to create a Website (workcloser2home.com) to connect businesses to the County’s “hidden workforce.” During the campaign, SB&A helped recruit thirty Spotsylvania companies to participate in publicizing a large number of available positions. This successful marketing program has attracted thousands of qualified workers to workcloser2home.com and has helped to fill positions with local talent.
